Repairing Gelcoat Blisters on a Fibreglass Boat Using Six10® Epoxy?

Gelcoat bubble repair on a fiberglass boat using Six10® Epoxy?

Noticed bubbles on your gelcoat? What’s next?

You just got your boat out of the water. There you go – bubbles in your gelcoat. Ignoring them may seem like an easy way out, but it’s not. Neglecting it could lead to bigger problems such as a full hull overhaul, gelcoat removal or even a full protective coating job. So what is the solution? Deal with bubbles as they appear. Make a quick repair with WEST SYSTEM® Six10 Thickened Epoxy Adhesive. It’s easier than you think!

How do bubbles open?

Start by opening the bubbles. Use a small abrasive tool for this. Make sure you remove the entire bubble, including the edges of the bubble dome. Then clean the cavity. Use an alcohol pad and change it frequently to remove any contamination. Repeat the process until the laminate is dry to the touch. It is especially important to repeat the wiping with alcohol on blisters that were filled with liquid at the time they were crushed.

How to apply Six10 glue?

Now fill the voids using Six10 glue. Dose it through a static mixer. Spread it flush with the surrounding hull using a putty knife or plastic spatula. Remember, don’t overfill!
Spread with a plastic spatula.
Wet sand.
After filling, it’s time for wet sanding. Use 80-120 grit sandpaper or wash with water. If it’s cold, let the epoxy harden overnight before sanding.
Finally, apply the chosen color.
What makes Six10 Thickened Epoxy Adhesive effective?

Six10 glue is a silica-based thickened epoxy. It is an excellent moisture barrier. When applied to the bubble cavity using a static mixer, it fills the void with airless epoxy. This prevents small bubbles in the coatings from creating shortcuts for moisture to penetrate the hull structure. The result? Moisture barrier better than the original gelcoat!

How long does this repair method take?

Bubbles develop slowly. With this method and careful monitoring, your hull should stay in good shape for two to three years. But remember, if the bubbles get too big, a complete overhaul may be necessary. This repair method is intended for localized blisters or temporary repairs prior to full anti-osmosis treatment.
